About West Midlands Creative Alliance:
Local artists in Birmingham and Solihull are getting a helpful push to encourage them to turn their creative talent into a successful business, with the support of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and local training provider, Creative Alliance.
Backed by the LSC's regional European Social Fund (ESF) co-financing programme, the Morning After project is open to individuals with a creative talent in a variety of fields including the visual arts, photography and community art education. Targeting individuals that are already using their creative talent or have a job in an unrelated field, each artist is offered a package of support to help them on the road to a successful business.
The practical support is provided through a programme of support sessions covering everything from how to market their creative business, to financial and intellectual property rights management, as well as tips on how to access support and introductions to relevant networking groups. All the advice is provided by recognised local experts.
At the end of the project, the artists gain a qualification equivalent to an NVQ Level 2, which helps to boost their confidence and encourage them to take their own creative industry to the next stage.
For those that want to take their creative business interest to the next stage, by developing a well structured business plan and raising finance, the LSC's regional ESF co-financing programme funds a further project, Makers and Shapers, leading to a Level 3 Award in creative business start-up. This part of the support package is available to artists across the West Midlands region.

Eligibility:
Morning After - All participants must live in an objective 2 area and be in some kind of full or part time employment.

Makers and Shapers - No restrictions on work or home address, open to both employed and unemployed creative individuals with a creative business idea.

Date of Support/service availability:
Morning After - Training cycles commence in June and October, with 3 different focuses on each cycle, Visual Art, Photography and Community/participatory arts, please contact the office to find out if there's a Strand best suited to your practice. Makers and Shapers - The next training cycle starts June 07, but other dates will be announced soon

Other info:
Annie Laughrin, project manager at Creative Alliance, said:

"Many artists come to us with the idea that the only way to make it is to show their work at a gallery, or something similar, when in actual fact they can generate income in other ways, by getting involved in community art education initiatives or promoting their work in other ways. The package of support we provide equips them with the professional and personal skills necessary to get them on to a more positive business footing."

Karen Brown, contract manager at the region's Learning and Skills Council, said:

"The creative industries are a growth sector of our regional economy and it is important that we support their continued development. This project provides practical support in a way that helps individual artists to benefit - developing the professional and personal skills they need to succeed."

For more information about the Creative Alliance support projects, run from the Custard Factory in Digbeth, ring 0121 224 7308 or email annie@creativealliance.org.uk.

About Creative Launchpad:
Creative Launchpad is a unique project offering support services to the creative industries, both those operating in it, and those trying to support the development of it.
We base our client services of advice, guidance, business support, 1-to-1 consultancy, training and seminars for creative clients around a structure that will identify exactly what support you require, even if you are unsure of exactly what you are looking for.
We often assist clients just to identify all of their business needs, rather than assisting with the solving the ones that we can. Where we can solve them we will, where we can't, we then look out to a huge number of support agencies to identify exactly the organisation that you should be approaching, and refer you accordingly - often called signposting.

Eligibility:
Eligibility criteria is varied according to the wide range of programmes we provide. Please contact us to discuss your eligibility for specific programmes

About The University of Warwick Science Park: Ignite Programme:
Ignite is a flexible package of free and grant aided advice and practical help, designed to allow start-up and early stage companies to tap into the resources of UWSP and its know-how. Its one aim is to help the owners/managers of innovation-led businesses to grow faster and make more money - now and in the long term.

So how could you benefit?
Over an extended period of time, an experienced business mentor will work along side you to plan the development of your business and to pro-actively identify and access resources to support you in driving your business forward. Just to give you a flavour, in practical terms this could mean:
Developing an action plan to achieve your business objectives.
Guiding you through developing a business plan to access funding from banks and other sources. (Ignite does not have funds to invest in client's businesses).
Refining your marketing strategy or implementing your sales plan.
And, in the case of start-up businesses, an operational base to give you credibility in the eyes of customers and suppliers.
Obviously there are many other areas of business where we could support you, but it's firstly a matter of understanding the nature of your business, the crucial issues to be tackled and a plan of action to start the ball rolling and then to maintain the tempo.

Eligibility:
1. A start-up or pre-start business or a small/early stage business
2. A knowledge based or innovation-led business with growth potential
