About West Midlands Creative Alliance:
Local artists in Birmingham and Solihull are getting a helpful push
to encourage them to turn their creative talent into a successful business,
with the support of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and local training
provider, Creative Alliance.
Backed by the LSC's regional European
Social Fund (ESF) co-financing programme, the Morning
After project is
open to individuals with a creative talent in a variety of fields including
the visual arts, photography and community art education. Targeting
individuals that are already using their creative talent or have a
job in an unrelated field, each artist is offered a package of support
to help them on the road to a successful business.
The practical support
is provided through a programme of support sessions covering everything
from how to market their creative business, to financial and intellectual
property rights management, as well as tips on how to access support and
introductions to relevant networking groups. All the advice is provided
by recognised local experts.
At the end of the project,
the artists gain a qualification equivalent to an NVQ Level 2, which helps
to boost their confidence and encourage them to take their own creative
industry to the next stage.
For those that want to take their creative business
interest to the next stage, by developing a well structured business
plan and raising finance, the LSC's regional ESF co-financing
programme funds a further project, Makers and
Shapers, leading to a

Other info:
Annie Laughrin, project manager at Creative Alliance, said:
"Many artists come to us with the idea that
the only way to make it is to show their work at a gallery, or something
similar, when in actual fact they can generate income in other ways,
by getting involved in community art education initiatives or promoting
their work in other ways. The package of support we provide equips
them with the professional and personal skills necessary to get them
on to a more positive business footing."
Karen Brown, contract manager at the region's
Learning and Skills Council, said:
"The creative industries are a growth sector
of our regional economy and it is important that we support their continued
development. This project provides practical support in a way that
helps individual artists to benefit - developing the professional and
personal skills they need to succeed."
For more information about the Creative Alliance support projects, run
